Free: the 7-Day Uncook Challenge. Start in 60 seconds

Day 2 of 7. 10 minutes

Kill notifications

Keep the 10% that matter.

Day two. Notifications. Most of them are lying to you.

Chimp

Why it works

A buzz costs focus

A Florida State study found that just getting a notification, without even checking it, hurt focus about as much as using the phone.

"Maybe" is the hook

Dopamine isn't the pleasure chemical. It's the wanting chemical, and it fires hardest when a reward might show up. A buzz might be a message. Usually it's nothing.

Slot machine rules

Mostly nothing, sometimes a win. That pattern keeps you checking. Mute the junk and your brain stops waiting for the next pull.

Your move today

10 minutesGo app by app. Keep real people, your calendar and truly urgent stuff. Mute everything else. Bonus: turn off the red badge numbers.

The notification cleaner

Pick Keep or Mute for each kind of app. Then mute them in Settings and tick each one off here.

  • Calls and texts from real people
  • Calendar and reminders
  • Rides, deliveries, bank alerts
  • Social media: likes, follows, comments
  • Loud group chats
  • Shopping and deals
  • Games
  • News and breaking alerts
  • Streaming: new episode, live now
  • Email (check it on purpose instead)
  • Any app that "misses you"

How to mute an app

  1. Settings, then Notifications.
  2. Tap the app.
  3. Turn off Allow Notifications. Want it quieter instead? Turn off Sounds and Badges.
