Make your phone boring

Grayscale, one home screen, done.

Day three. We make your phone boring. On purpose.

Why it works

Color grabs you first

Apps are built like candy: bright colors, red dots, tiny rewards. Your brain notices color and new things automatically, before you decide anything.

Gray is less tasty

In a small study, college students who switched their phones to grayscale used them less every day. Same apps. Less candy.

Friction beats willpower

Typing an app's name is a tiny delay. That delay is the point: it gives you a moment to ask if you actually want to open it.

Your move today

5 minutesTurn on grayscale. Move your social apps into a folder on the last screen. From now on, open them by typing the name in search.

The grayscale switch

See it before you do it. This is your phone with the candy scraped off.

Tap again to bring the color back.

Turn it on for real

  1. Settings, then Accessibility, then Display & Text Size.
  2. Tap Color Filters. Turn them on and pick Grayscale.
  3. Shortcut: Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut, Color Filters. Now a triple click on the side button turns gray on and off.
